From Florence to the rural church of San Giovanni Battista in Remole (Sieci)
From Florence, take the Aretina road in the direction of the Rovezzano district. You will come across the park of Villa Favard. Continue along the Aretina (the road runs along the Arno River) to get to the village of Girone. In the small piazza you will see what remains of a fulling-mill ('gualchiere'): Gualchiere del Girone. Stay on the same road, which runs through the hamlet of Compiobbi. Here, after taking the railroad underpass, you will see the 18th-century church of San Donato a Torri. Return to the main road and go over the Sambre torrent. Further on the road branches off towards Fiesole. In Compiobbi there are two sites worthy of mentions: the church of San Pietro a Quintole and Villa Le Falle. From the main road you can enjoy the sight of the Gualchiere di Remole on the other side of the Arno River.
Further on along the road you will enter the hamlet of Sieci. The road here branches off on the left toward Monteloro. Another fork in the road up ahead will allow you to reach the hamlet of Molin del Piano, where you can visit the church of San Martino a Sieci. From Molin del Piano you can reach the church of Sant’Andrea a Doccia along a very scenic road.
Go back to the main road and continue in the direction of Sieci, where you can visit the rural church of San Giovanni Battista a Remole.
From Sieci to the Museum of Sacred Art of the Vallombrosan Abbey
Take the Aretina road towards Pontassieve. Before getting to the town you will see a fork in the road on the left and a sign indicating the church of San Martino and San Giusto a Quona, which you can reach by taking the road that leads to the top of a hill, which offers stunning views.
Backtrack to the Aretina road to get to Pontassieve, which lies at the confluence of the Arno and Sieve rivers. From Pontassieve, before setting off to Vallombrosa, cross the Arno and visit the hamlet of Rosano, where an important abbey, the Abbey of Santa Maria, is located.
Go back to Pontassieve. There road here branches off towards Pelago, a town which lies at the foothills of the Appenine and the Pratomagno mountains in the Sieve Valley, and where the pieve di San Clemente is situated.
From Pelago, go back to the Aretina road and continue in the direction of Paterno. You will get ot a fork in the road. Take the road on the left to reach the castle of Ristonchi from where you can enjoy magnificent views. Return to the main road, which will take you through Paterno and to another fork. Take the road on the left which leads to the church of San Niccolò a Magnale. Return once again to the main road and continue along it. When you are past Paterno the road goes uphill and runs past Tosi, through the hamlet of Pian di Melosa, and enters the Forest of Vallombrosa. Continue along the road to get to the Abbey and to its Museum of Sacred Art.
